Course Details

Description

Latin poetry was not just about epic deeds, tragic love and invective against the constantly declining mores. A few amusing poems have come down to us which at first glance might seem to be mere parodies of great works that came before. On closer inspection, however, we can appreciate how these pieces take up ordinary scenes and, through the magic of poetry, turn the boring everyday into playful art.

In this course, we will read a few of these poems, typically numbering around 100 lines. Among them AV's "Copa" and "Moretum" as well as Vespa's "Judicium Coci et Pistoris". Echoing and playing off the pastoral tradition, these are a great follow-up reading to Virgil's
Eclogues (Bucolics).

Pieces like these – some of which are from the
Appendix Vergiliana, while others have come down to us in their own separate ways – offer us a precious glimpse into Roman literary culture and into poetry written for a wider audience, constantly produced and widely circulated. The poetry of the everyday.
