Gellius' Greatest Hits Vol. 1: For Speakers - Intermediate
Instructor: Andrew “Andreas” Morehouse
Description
Aulus Gellius' Noctes Atticae is one of the earliest examples of a commonplace book. Gellius wrote 20 books with topics varying greatly from points of grammar to the story of Alexander the Great's horse, Bucephalus. Gellius' value cannot be overstated as he writes incredibly interesting Latin passages with a careful eye for style as well as being a font of knowledge that otherwise might not have been passed down to us.
In this course, we will read some of Gellius' more memorable passages, paying careful attention to meaning and occasionally digressing where appropriate to foster meaningful conversation connected to the reading, utilizing Gellius' language in the process, thus bolstering both reading and speaking proficiency. This course is for those looking to read extensively with others while also enjoying Gellius' Latin.
Designed for those with prior Latin-speaking experience (roughly two years of college Latin), this course welcomes both classical and ecclesiastical pronunciations. All materials are provided.
