Gellius' Greatest Hits Vol. 1: For Listeners Only - Any level
Instructor: Andrew “Andreas” Morehouse
Description
Aulus Gellius' Noctes Atticae is one of the earliest examples of a commonplace book. Gellius wrote 20 books with topics varying greatly from points of grammar to the story of Alexander the Great's horse, Bucephalus. Gellius' value cannot be overstated as he writes incredibly interesting Latin passages with a careful eye for style as well as being a font of knowledge that otherwise might not have been passed down to us.
This course is designed for those who perhaps are just getting into their spoken Latin journey and want to engage with it in a low-pressure environment focused on listening with participation in the chat box. It can also be for those who cannot attend classes but would like to be able to listen to Latin reading every week.
In this course, we will read through some of Gellius' more memorable passages, paying careful attention to meaning and occasionally digressing where appropriate to highlight useful linguistic structures connected to the reading that aid in Latin conversation. I will discuss content, language, style, and how we can utilize Gellius' language in speech, as well.
Designed for those with prior Latin experience (roughly two years of college Latin). All materials are provided; pricing for this listen-only format is 50% of our interactive class rate.
