Echoes from the Grave: Erictho and the Voice of Latin Epic (Intermediate)

$450.00

Instructor:

Victor Kaplun

Description:

During this course, we'll be going through the new graded poetry reader Erictho: Tartarorum Terror, authored by Victor Kaplun and Jessica McCormack. The course is designed for those who wish to tackle hexameter poetry and includes a deep dive into the various aspects of Latin phonology and metrics, which we will discuss primarily in Latin.

About the book:
Erictho is perhaps the most fearsome witch of antiquity. She’s so unholy that she cannot enter into places of human habitation but must dwell in defiled and emptied tombs in remote cemeteries. Her breath itself is poisonous and magical. She can create zombies that can see the future. She can open fissures in the Earth to yell down into the Underworld.

Erictho is featured in book VI of Lucan’s De Bello Civili, an epic poem about the conflict between Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great. Our reader consists of selected lines from this poem that are rephrased in two different levels of Latin prose, furnished with illustrations and a detailed Latin-to-Latin glossary.

Sessions will take place via Zoom and are capped at 6 participants to ensure a personalized learning environment.

Schedule:

12 1.5-hour sessions over 8 weeks

Tue, Thu, Sat, 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM EST*
