Why Are Athenians So Annoying? Theophrastus’s Characters IV - Intermediate to Advanced

from $200.00

Description

Imagine you are walking through the Agora: perhaps buying figs, asking what your tribe has been up to, catching the latest political gossip, or trying to have a serious conversation about virtue. Then he appears: the bore, the flatterer, the cheapskate, the shameless man, the man who never leaves at the right moment. Athens had philosophy, drama, democracy—and a great many people who made daily life harder than it needed to be.
Theophrastus’s
Characters are funnier than most ancient Greek comedies. He knew his people well. In this continuation of our reading of the Characters, beginning around Character 10 or 12 and moving onward, we will study how he turns everyday annoyance into precise Greek.
The course is intended as advanced Greek conversation and analysis. We will read Theophrastus closely, discuss the characters in Greek, and use exercises to practise describing, imitating, complaining about, and diagnosing these people in good Attic.
