Description
You are in a conversation with Socrates. You want to ask a question, without looking foolish, you don’t want him to crush you with irony like you’re the worst of sophists… or maybe you just want to quietly suggest that someone’s argument makes absolutely no sense. Now, what if Lucian walked by, what would he add to that already explosive mix?
This course is about the Greek of conversation: how people greet, question, object, clarify, hesitate, agree, disagree, mock politely, and keep an argument moving. We will draw especially on Plato and Lucian, not as authors to be “covered,” but as masters of dialogue whose language can teach us how Greek conversation works.
The course is intended as Greek conversation and close analysis for lower-intermediate to intermediate learners, but advanced students will gain a lot from it, learning idioms and not-so-commonly taught turns of phrase. We will work with short exchanges, key phrases, and recurring idioms, then practise using them actively through guided conversation, paraphrase, and small rhetorical exercises.
