Epistulae Caecae: Fast Spoken Letters of Pliny and Seneca - Advanced

from $200.00

Instructor: Roberto Salazar

Description

Latinists often read with their eyes only,  slowly and analytically. But Latin prose was meant to be heard and understood as it was heard recited aloud, followed in sequence, carried by rhythm, phrasing, expectation, and rhetorical shape.
This course trains the ear through the letters of Pliny and Seneca, read at a lively pace. Like previous courses, the method is paradoxical: by listening to Latin faster, repeatedly, and with guidance, students learn to understand it more naturally and less painfully, and how to read it better.
In so doing, we will pay attention to colometry, rhetorical structure, pauses, balance, emphasis, and the way Latin sentences unfold for a listener. But the aim is not simply analysis. The goal is comprehension: to help students follow Latin beyond the habit of stopping at every form, translating every word, or waiting for the written page to rescue them.
The course is aimed at advanced students, but intermediate learners who are looking to challenge themselves are more than welcome.
