Description
Catullus famously hailed from Verona, a town that, during his lifetime, was solidly outside the fines of Italy, in Cisalpine Gaul. This class aims to read a selection of poems in which Catullus references his home province or others from his homeland to better consider how provinciality is expressed in Catullus' poetry.
Poems to be read are subject to change (and suggestions are welcome) but some under consideration are 1, 17, 39, 43, 59, 67, 77, 97, 102, and others.
This is intended to exercise speaking and reading skills. Advance preparation is discouraged. Metrics will be discussed alongside content. The level of discussion will depend on the participants, but the class is intended for all levels and proficiencies in speaking. Familiarity with Latin metrics (in English) is encouraged.
This course will meet twice a week (Tuesday and Thursday) beginning on July 14th
