Description
In each session, we will read selections from one of eight awesome Latin poets: Horace from the "Golden Age;" Aldhelm, Walahfrid Strabo, and Hildegard from the Medieval Period; Isotta Nogarola and Martha Marchina in the Early Modern Period; and Stephen Berard and Anna Elissa Radke in the 21st century. We will practice reading in meter (no prior experience in this needed, but of course it's welcomed!), and we will discuss in Latin the poems' meanings, themes, and artistry, and try to touch on the cultural contexts that transmitted poetic traditions all the way to us today.
