Description
This advanced Latin speaking course is for students who already feel comfortable speaking Latin, but want to keep growing in fluency, precision, and style. We will use the ancient progymnasmata as a guide for crafting conversation and exercises centered around developing our facility in Latin.
Each week will focus on a different kind of rhetorical exercise: fable, narrative, anecdote, confirmation and refutation, praise and blame, comparison, character description, thesis, and argument. These exercises will give us a structure for conversation, storytelling, debate, improvisation, and thoughtful discussion in Latin.
Students will practice retelling stories, expanding and condensing narratives, arguing for and against ideas, praising and criticizing figures from history and literature, comparing people and events, describing character and emotion, and discussing more abstract questions with greater freedom. Short Latin readings may serve as models or starting points, but the center of the course will be active use of Latin: listening, responding, paraphrasing, elaborating, persuading, and thinking aloud.
This course is especially well suited for advanced Latin speakers, Latin teachers, immersion participants, and highly proficient students who want to move beyond ordinary conversation into richer and more structured expression. The goal is not simply to speak more Latin, but to speak Latin with more confidence, depth, flexibility, and style: clārius, cōpiōsius, subtilius, ēlegantius.
