Description
In the letters of Pliny the Younger we find everything from correspondence with the emperor to a scientifically-accurate description of the eruption of Vesuvius and detailed descriptions of a house’s architecture. He is equally at home dishing gossip and erudition and, as many have it, seeks to position himself as an important figure in the literary and intellectual elite of his time. We’ll read several of Pliny’s “big hit” letters across many of these different arenas in this course, focused both on the texts themselves (and their artistry) and what we can learn from them about the ancient word.
