Course Details
Description
Erasmus, Renaissance humanist and key figure in the Protestant Reformation, was very much concerned with the learning of Latin for both literary erudition and Christian moral instruction. Hence his huge collection of Colloquia for schoolchildren treating everything under the sun, from saying hello dozens of ways to proper classroom behavior to... folktales about shipwrecks! In this class, we'll read Erasmus's "Naufragium," at once a poetic description of a shipwreck, a hilarious tall-tale contest between schoolboys, and a peek into how Christian schools treated ancient religious practices.
