Seneca’s Passionate Medea - Intermediate to Advanced
Instructor: Jamie “Iacobus” Banks
Course Details
Description
In this course we will tackle a large part of Seneca's tragedy Medea. The focus will be on the juicy drama of the text itself, though we will discuss some context too and can, following the enrolled group's interest, get into debates like whether Seneca's tragedies were meant to be staged (or are even stage-able!), the relation between his drama and his Stoic philosophical works, or his Medea's connection to Euripides'. Our reading will be close, but not to excess: the goal is that we all get what's going on and appreciate Seneca's rhetoric and artistry while enjoying the story and not getting bogged down in philology. No work outside of class is expected and no background with Seneca or Latin drama is required, though the instructor will suggest further reading for anyone interested. Seneca's drama can be dense and students are warmly encouraged, but by no means required, to read the short play in English translation before or alongside the course.
