Encountering Ovid’s Metamorphoses - Intermediate to Advanced

from $200.00

Instructor: Jamie “Iacobus” Banks

Course Details

Description

This text-grounded course will focus on discussion of some "big hit" episodes from Ovid's Metamorphoses--tentatively Apollo and Daphne, Daedalus and Icarus, Pygmalion, and Baucis and Philemon, but we will choose our episodes together in the first session. This can serve as an introduction to Ovid or his epic for those who have not read him or a focused, collaborative dive into literary details and interpretative subtleties for those more versed in the poem: Ovid rewards re-reading richly. In either case, participants will come away with not just a repertoire of Ovid scenes they know inside and out, but greater ability to discuss Latin poetry in Latin. Depending on student background and interest, we may look at the reception of these episodes in the course too, whether in later literary authors or the visual arts.
