How to Annoy Greek People in Greek: MORE of Theophrastus’s Characters - Intermediate to Advanced
Description
Do you aspire to irritate people with the precision of a fourth-century Athenian?
This course delves into Theophrastus’s Characters, drawing on Attic Greek at its sharpest, richest, and most stylistically nuanced.
Each session focuses on a single persona—the superstitious man, the flatterer, the fault-finder—and on the linguistic textures that bring them to life: idioms, characteristic formulas, syntactic habits, and the finely shaded vocabulary of vice. We will also explore passages not treated in previous iterations of this course, opening up new opportunities for advanced learners to expand their expressive range.
The original text serves as a springboard for sophisticated conversation, reenactment, and stylistic imitation. Designed for students already comfortable with Greek, this course combines textual subtlety with active spoken Attic. Come prepared to meet every shade of human annoyance—and to reproduce it with classical elegance.
